Objectives and Course Outline
Objectives
At the completion of the Introduction to Toxicology program
the student will be able to:
1. Define the different types of chemicals.
• In this course elements will be described by how they
fit on the chemical periodic table. The periodic table classifies
chemicals according to their particular structural arrangement,
this arrangement effects how it interacts with other elements
to form chemical reactions. This understanding will provide
the basis for all subsequent courses in HAZMAT instruction.
2. Describe and give examples of chemical reactions.
• With the knowledge of element interaction the student
will learn how chemicals balance themselves electrically this
provides the basis of understanding of what will be formed
if chemical X is mixed with chemical Y.
3. Understand Toxicodynamics and Toxicokinetics
• As the student learns the elements and electrical
balance a practical approach will be taken for them to understand
what the human body will do once it comes in contact with
the chemical. Toxicodynamics is what the poison will do to
the body and Toxicokinetics is what the body does to the chemical.
4. Define and Describe the system of table top exercises
• With the understanding of elements and basic toxicology
an exercise will be administered to demonstrate the applications
of chemistry and toxicology in a HAZMAT scene.
5. Understand resources for table top exercises
• While being able to apply technical knowledge to a
table top exercise learning how to develop and run an exercise
is a valuable asset for long term planning and training.
