In-depth Review of Orthopaedic Injuries for EMS One Day Course
Objectives and Course Outline
1. Anatomy review for EMS
• In this section anatomy will be reviewed to give the
EMS personnel an in-depth understanding on how to approach
fracture management in the field and apply this for HAZMAT
team monitoring. Often HAZMAT and EMS personnel have pre-existing
orthopaedic injuries that can be exacerbated during strenuous
work and then the worker becomes the patient. With an understanding
of orthopaedic injuries injury prevention can be instituted.
2. Orthopaedic approach to field management of acute orthpeadic
injuries.
• An anatomic approach to field fracture assessment
will be discussed. In a disaster hospital care may not be
immediately available and prolonged field management of injuries
may have to be administered. This section will help the EMS
staff make important decisions in triage and treatment in
an austere environment.
3. Orthopaedic approach to EMS and HAZMAT personnel assessment.
• In this section common orthopaedic problems will be
reviewed. The treatment, physical assessment and a discussion
on physical capabilities associated with these maladies will
be reviewed. With this knowledge the EMS provider can provide
important information to management staff on personnel capabilities
prior to allowing them to go into the “Warm” or
“Hot” zone. A checklist will also be provided
that helps monitor the orthpaedic health of HAZMAT and EMS
responders trained in hazardous materials response.
4. Twelve cases presentations will be provided.
• Six case presentations will pull together bone and
nerve anatomy, physical assessment and treatment. The treatment
application will include triage and treatment decisions in
an austere environment.
• The other six cases will review common orthopaedic
injuries and how they can affect EMS and HAZMAT personnel
when required to work in PPE and doing heavy lifting. The
operational decision process will be emphasized, so the skills
can be applied.
