Introduction to the Chemistry of HAZMAT
(3 hours)
This program is ideal for medical providers who do not
have a solid understanding of Chemistry or who have been
out of the academic setting for an extended period of time.
It is strongly recommended that this program is completed
prior to AHLS or Advanced Medical Operations at HAZMAT incidents.
At the completion of the Introduction to Toxicology program
the student will be able to:
1. Define the different types of chemicals.
2. Describe and give examples of chemical reactions.
3. Understand Toxicodynamics and Toxicokinetics
Decontamination Overview (2 hours)
This two hour lecture orients the student to the decontamination
process, including the different types of decontamination,
appropriate PPE, ambulatory/non/ambulatory patients, and
proper procedure for removal of contaminated clothing.
Medical Support of HAZMAT teams (2 hours)
Medical providers have two primary responsibilities at
the scene of a HAZMAT incident: patient care and medical
support. This lecture will review the physical strain placed
on responders, outline the basic components of a comprehensive
medical program, and provide the parameters for decision-making
about individual responder fitness-for-duty.
Medical Operations in the Cold Zone (1
½ hours)
Medical providers need to understand their role at a HAZMAT
incident and know what to expect when receiving patients
who have been through the decontamination process. This
lecture helps you define that role and gives you some basic
tools to evaluate the decon process to ensure that you are
receiving patients safely.
Chemical, Biological, or Nuclear Incidents

These lectures are designed to enlighten your staff about
Chemical, Biological, or Nuclear incidents, including injuries
